Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna in trouble for auctioning the ‘Rustom’ costume
Legal Notice sent to Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna for auctioning the ‘Rustom’ costume
Akshay Kumar has put himself in the controversy for auctioning the ‘Rustom’ costume. Rustom is a Tinu Desai directorial, 2016 Indian periodic thriller film. The film is based on the real-life incident of a Naval officer and a businessman. Akshay Kumar went on to win the best actor award on the 64th national film awards for his performance.
Akshay Kumar announced that he is going to bid the costume he wore on the movie for a good cause. He said that the idea of auctioning the ‘Rustom’ costume evoked for a good cause. This didn’t go well with the public as well as with the Army people. The news regarding the auction was conveyed by Akshay Kumar’s wife Twinkle Khanna. Her post reads on twitter as “Using all the goodwill I have left to raise money for a good cause 🙂 Do bid folks!”. Twinkle Khanna backed her husband’s idea to sell the uniform and said it is for the noble cause. She added that the money would go for the rescue of animals and for its welfare.
Things didn’t go well with the Army officers
An army officer Lt Col Sandeep Ahalwat condemned this act strongly by calling this as a “sick idea”. He added, “the actor that wore on the movie was a costume and not a uniform”. He also said “Indian armed forces wife do not auction their husbands uniform as it was not a piece of cloth like the one that producers hand over to cine stars during the process of making the movie”. The permission to wear the uniform comes from the office of the President of India. A soldier’s uniform is his blood, toil, and sweat and it will have a place in his mortal along with the tricolor. He warned Twinkle to produce her in front of the court if she even makes an attempt to auction the costume as “uniform”.
Twinkle’s reply to the criticism
As this didn’t go well with Twinkle she replied to his comments by tweeting “is it fair to harm a women’s body for making an attempt to raise funds for the animals welfare”. She added that she will not retaliate with the violent threats but by taking legal action. As the next step, Eleven serving defense officers and eight others sent a legal notice to the actors Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna for playing with the sentiments of the armed forces. The group that included wife of a navy man and seven retired officers offended that the actors have listed the costume as an original Naval uniform.
Copy of the notice sent to the Defense Minister
“Uniforms of the armed forces post a potential threat to the national security as the auctioned uniform could be used in many ways by the stranger which might pave the way to anti-national elements”. the notice said. A copy of the notice has been sent to the auction house and to the office of the defense minister. They urged the minister to look into this immediately and requested him to take necessary actions on the actors involved.
The bid for the costumes ends on May 26. It currently stands at a price of Rs 2,35,000.
